Heritage Turkeys

We breed heritage Blue Slate turkeys, a breed that is on the watch list by the Heritage Livestock Conservancy (Heritage Livestock Conservancy - The Blue Slate Turkey). These birds breed naturally and enjoy active and happy lives. Our birds are cage free and are fed a diet which includes fresh produce. They live in large pens, run, play and flap their wings. Each bird is handled and is used to human contact. Our family is active in 4-H and we show our birds regularly.

We maintain our own breeding pens. Fertile eggs from these pens are collected and incubated in a Brinsea incubator located on our kitchen mantle. Birds are hatched brooded in our home, and when they are big enough graduate to the barn where they are raised indoors under heat lamps in large hutches until they are old enough to move into the large pens outside.

Each pen is protected by 6 foot fencing and aviary netting. Without the netting turkeys end up in the branches of the redwood trees as high as 40 feet up. The netting also protects our livestock from large birds of prey. At night all our birds are locked securely in coops and poultry houses to keep them safe from nigh time predators such as raccoons and fox.
